Construction Week hosts 35 Lincolnshire schools as they get a taste of the industry

From 2-4 October almost 900 students from 35 Lincolnshire schools took part in hands-on activities to get a taste of what life is like in the construction industry during the three day event Construction Week.

The event takes place each year and is designed to raise awareness to the diverse range of careers available in the construction industry. Organised by The Lincoln Group Training Association (LGTA) in partnership with The EBP and Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the event brings together businesses and schools from across the county.

Throughout the week, the event had support from 35 businesses including Lindum Group, G F Tomlinson and Gelder. Each business provided a host of hands-on activities to encourage and inform students about the construction industry. There were 899 students who participated in the activities that ranged from a joinery experience in door hanging to operating mini diggers and surveying.

Paula Bailey, Delivery Manager at The EBP said: “The event continues to change and this year we hosted 35 schools with a total of 899 young people over the three days. It is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn real skills and take part in activities that give a flavour of what a career in the construction industry could be like and for the schools to build contacts with local employers.”

With the construction industry taking up around 7% of employment in the East Midlands, it provides a large amount of opportunity for young people. All the activities were designed to give the students a taster into the varied careers that are available whilst also giving them a better understanding of the construction industry.

The free event continues to be popular and the opportunity allows schools and businesses to forge relationships and learn real skills from the construction industry. In a survey conducted following the event 100% of schools attending said they were interested in returning next year and 70% of students felt more aware of employment opportunities available in construction.
